Hellboy

Ah! my oft neglected blog.. it has cried out for some attention, so here you have a new (old) drawing! This is a personal drawing I did, actually way back in the summer, and it was lost to the abyss for some time. The first piece of fan art to make it on my blog.

Mike Mignola's Hellboy is consistently one of my favourite comics - period, and the artist himself is often an inspiration. This drawing was an homage to them both, as well as an experiment in using more blacks in my inking style, so there you go.

I'll try not to let the weeds get too overgrown on this budding little website again...

Chester

As I had mentioned in my post yesterday, I had the opportunity to work on the recently published indie comic "The Intrepids", and one of my favourite parts of that working experience was getting to do a pin up for the second issue.
I always love the opportunity to interpret someone else's character design, to add my own creative spin to another artists idea's.
In this case, I was particularly drawn to the visuals of the Chester character. I loved that he had an almost preppy / geeky outfit , something like a prep school uniform, and then he had all these gadgets and mechanical contraptions adorning him. The big clunky backpack he carries around with him, and his massive fisted gauntlet where a blast to add my own take to.
The character is often on the sidelines of the action as well, surveying with a collections of monitors and computers, so here you have my version of Chester from the Intrepids, which appeared in the back of the second issue.

I've mentioned on Facebook recently that I was fortunate enough to be able to work on a new independent comic series that is being published by Image comics, called the Intrepid's, with fellow ACAD Alumni Scott Kowalchuk. Scott provided the Illustration work, and I did all the colour artwork.
It was a very challenging project that took me out of my element, and was a a lot of firsts for me. I had never coloured someone else's work, nor coloured any comic pages before this, so I had a lot of learning to do, while of course working to maintain a timely schedule as well. ( well, tried as hard as I could..)
It certainly led to many late nights, but I think ultimately it was in many aspects, a rewarding learning experience. As well as being very exciting to have a published comic with my name on it!
Ultimately it was very time consuming to work on this project, and it took me away from drawing and developing my own stories ( which is still, and always has been my goal.) so after completing the first two issues of the series, I decided to leave the colour work in someone else's capable hands.
Both of the issue's I had worked on are in comic shops now. They were released in March and April respectively ( sorry for the late post.) And actually issue 4 has just come out today! I think you should definitely check it out. It's fresh and fun, and of course it's good to support young up and coming independent comic creators. I wish the creative team all the best in finishing the series.

These are my finished inked pages for my short story "From the Depths". I originally planned for this to be an exercise in sequential storytelling, and to serve as a portfolio piece. As I've spent time with it I've had other idea's for expanding the story and the world it exists within. So there be more of this to come. I think these might look even better coloured as well...
I had previously posted my pencils for the story, and you'll noticed I've changed a couple of the pages to have new story pacing. Enjoy!

The irony of course is that I have been locked away in the studio, developing some new peojects, I've just forgotten about the sharing part! This new piece is my contribution to Happy Harbor Comics (Edmonton) Vision of Comics art show which opened this past friday. ( I know I should have given a bit more notice for those who may have actually wanted to check it out....)
It's an illustration I'm quite happy with, featuring the golden avenger, Iron man, and some nasty robot monsters ! Prints might still be for sale at Happy Harbor comics ( or you can contact me if you're interested) proceeds will go to paying my rent...

The Coral creatures of the dark seas have been capturing my imagination lately. I love the disquiet of the human form in this strange alien environment.

I've been talking a lot about drawing comics lately, and I'm very determined to make my way into the comic publishing world, but not many people have seen the pages from my first short story yet, so here they finally are.
These are obviously at the pencil stage, I'm in the process of refining and inking the pages at the moment, and I plan on completing them; adding colour and design work, and possibly self publishing the story. I've also been adding to the story and might expand on it further.
It's about a clash between to worlds, or two ways of life. The environment is supposed to be eerie and surreal. It follows a strange young man-like creature in the depths of the ocean among caverns of coral reef. He encounters a young woman, a diver exploring the desolate landscape that is his habitat. They meet, and we see what reactions come from two self aware beings, from similar but different species, meeting for the first time..

I just recently finished this Illustration for BeatRoute Magazines' February issue. They wanted original art for a series of Tear-out Valentines, each one by a different artist, and I was happy to be picked as one of them. The victim is a martyr for love, and the female is like the god Eros, or Cupid. I'm happy with how it came out, I quite like the colours. Anyways, check out the Issue to collect all the valentines, and give them to that special someone.

This is the finished Ink painting for my promo illustration. It's more complex than anything I've illustrated with this technique, but I think it's turned out fairly well. Now I'm going to digitally finish off the illustration in photoshop, and add design elements for the post card, which I should hopefully be posting here soon.

This is a thumbnail sketch for an new personal illustration I'm working on. The work will be a postcard that I will mail out for self - promotion. I was thinking about what I wanted to say about myself, especially since this would be my first promo post card, I thought that it should convey an emergence, the initial steps to a greater exploration. I wanted to show I am a new artist looking to begin to share my work and my imagination with others, and to hopefully engage with a variety of people in all walks of life. Also I wanted to express my current interest and influence by science fiction works, books, and artwork. The image of an astronaut like explorer who would represent me as an artist, rising out of his electronic constrains to advance into the focal point.

This is a typographic exploration I did for my product design class. ( I designing a hypothetical denim company. I'll post more design pieces for this later.) I'm super excited with the ink drawing technique I've been playing with that I used here, I've begun incorporating it into other drawings and illustrations and getting some interesting results. This is my first project this year. It's a portrait study, supposed to be conceptual. Mine is a comment on how Marc Jacob's has become bigger than the individual, more of an icon, a cultural phenomena. It's not my favorite piece, I would love to do it over, and maybe I will. Painting it was fun.

The other is a sketch of an elderly man I saw on the train, he had a face full of character and wear from a long life. In the drawing he seems to wearing a smirk, of what's the cause, I'm not privy to.
